In October 2018 Brazilians elected Jair Bolsonaro as their new President. A former army officer who served under the military dictatorship, Bolsonaro has spent his political career campaigning against democracy and human rights. His notoriety comes from his repeated racist, sexist and homophobic statements and his defence of torture, extra-judicial executions and impunity for BrazilĀ“s security forces.
